Funnel web spider. I suspected something like that - for, indeed, he was resting in a funnel.

 
Actually
it's not a firm ID. You might also look for "grass spiders" using the search box. That's another kind that makes webs something like those. Or wait for comments from a spider expert.

Actually ID is good
a grass spider, Agelenopsis sp. is a type of funnel-web spider, so the ID would be good either way...one is just more specific than the other.
