Green aphid on dogbane -
Macrosiphum
2 miles west of Pierce, Pierce County, Nebraska, USA
July 29, 2009
Size: ~ 3 mm
I have keyed this aphid out to Aulacorthum solani in Blackmon and Eastop 2006. The host plant was Apocynum sp. (dogbane).

Definitely not Aulacorthum solani. The siphunculi have a small contstriction near the tip and there is a darker green stripe down the dorsum which points toward Macrosiphum. The siphunculi and cauda are also longer than what you'd see in A. solani, and A. solani usually has an area of darker green around the siphunculi. Also, the antennae of A. solani have more distinct dark spots at the joints of the antennal segments.

These images don't really provide views of many characters used in the polyphagous aphid key, such as the shape and texture of the frontal tubercles, and reticulations at the apex of the siphunculi. It does have the general look Macrosiphum euphorbiae though, which is also recorded colonizing this host.

. Would you mind providing a little info on how you got to this ID, so I can add it to the guide page?
Also, since you have that reference, I'm curious if it helps at all in sorting out some of the images
here
, which are sorted by host plant.
