Gomphus fraternus manitobanus ? - Gomphus - Male
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
July 5, 2008
I took this photo last year, along the Assiniboine River, near where it meets the Red River. At the time I took the photo, I was too green to notice the differences in the appendages between it and the Plains Clubtail which are also found in the area. The eye colour however always bothered me as it is green-blue rather than blue. I now believe this to be Gomphus fraternus manitobanus. I will post a close-up of the appendages for you to have a closer look and see what you think. A fellow Winnipegger and contributor to Bugguide photographed a similar specimen this year along the Red River (I believe) and it's in e-speaking with him about his subject that got me to thinking about mine from 2008. All opinions are welcome! My thanks.

But in looking at the amount of yellow on AS9 and the shape of the spots on 7 and 8 I think Gomphus externus or Plains Clubtail. At least in using the descriptions in Needham, Westfall and May. The thorax certainly does have some coloration typical of the Midlands; but the abdomen is more "Plains-like". I think the only way to be sure would be a complete lateral and dorsal views of the claspers.

Thanks Chad for the input. We've only got a very limited number of people up here that are familiar with G. fraternus manitobanus - perhaps I'll try to contact one of them and see what their opinion is. It would be interesting to know. Cheers.
