Marsh Ground Beetle???
This look something like the marsh ground beetle Elaphrus sp.
Just a guess. Was it at the edge of a pond or lake?

 
Habitat
We found several scurrying around a mud puddle several yards from a riverbank.

I agree, Elaphrus. These can be hard to take to species, unfortunately. Aren't they beautiful beetles?
