WOOT!!!!! What else can I say...
This individual flew to my porch light on a humid night. She probably originated from the large tract of forest (Preservation Park) near where I live.

Awesome!

Great that you even recognized it. A very knowledgeable colleague of mine one told me how he was sorting specimens from a malaise trap at a bioblitz in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and came across one of these. His response was "I don't even know what order this belongs in!" LOL!

Haha!

I only knew of it because of a slight interest in the Mecoptera. Excepting Panorpodidae, with this find and a subsequent hangingfly encounter, I have now met all of the NA Mecoptera families.
Haha, but I sure freaked out when I saw this insect. So did Steve Marshall, to whom I lended the specimen for shooting live photos (he's only ever collected them dead in malaise).

how many Panorpa ssp. have you collected? in Russia I had a small collection of them [a dozen spp tops], but the nearctic fauna is much richer

Not many, surprisingly...

I don't seem to run into them often, probably because suburban Toronto doesn't have good habitats for these insects. Most my Mecoptera encounters are in Guelph. I have found maybe three Panorpa spp.?
