It looks like the great golden digger to me. I was just chasing after one yesterday trying to get a shot, but didn't have your luck. Mine was too fast. :) Wait for the wasp people to be sure on the ID.

...I think. My only concern is that there is a lot more black on the femurs of my bug. I looked through a LOT of the S. ichneumoneus pics, and they *all* seemed to have straight orange femurs. Either a color variation? or maybe a different species?

 
dunno, other diff too
I just looked through the gallery of great golden digger and don't see an exact match for the darker femur. I'd also noticed the black part on the tail of yours seemed greater as well. I don't know what else it would be, but my knowledge in this area is limited.

 
Your knowledge
is superb, Andy. With a number of years of working at it, I hope to try to get close to your level. :) And I think we are in the right area, but who knows how many different Sphex there are...

Anyway, hopefully we'll both learn something new from one of the more knowledgeable BugGuiders!
