This is a great find
This may be the first male honey bee in the guide. No, you are not unobservant. The males seldom go out. They stay indoors and expect their sisters to feed them. From what I have read, they only leave the hive for mating or when they are kicked out.
Don't forget to mark them as males. I did it for you on this one.

I missed out on all the excitement...
...over this great find yesterday. (I managed to really mess up my neck/back and have been in sorry shape since last night...) Anyway, just wanted to say that I'm glad we're getting some more images of these fantastic looking males. I know that I was very impressed by the size and fuzziness of my specimen! Also, I added a little more info the Identification section on the species page and a photo comparison for distinguishing the sexes. I'll try to add more detail as time permits.

Ouch...
I miss out on some better closeups because of back/spine/knees. So heal quickly :)

Saw another one today.

Another One...
Harsi has a nice one at:

Thanks...
I'll keep an eye out for more :)

I hope I labeled them correctly. Any idea of subspecies?

i wonder whether this is a male Xylocopa
[disclaimer: i know squat about bees]

Thanks...
I looked through Carpenter Bees and Digger Bees but don't see anything similar. I need help :)

Looks like a male honey bee t
Looks like a male honey bee to me.

What kind?
We do have honey bees living in our attic but I've never seen one this big and with this shape of an abdomen. Can you be more specific or refer me to a similar looking image?

Almost certainly then a male
Almost certainly then a male from the colony living in your attic, the males typically have the very large eyes seen in this specimen as well as the larger more blocky abdomen. The following image is a fairly decent image of a drone.

Triple thanks for photo!
We've lived with these bees for 27 years come Aug. 15th and I've never seen one like this! Boy am I unobservant - especially before getting a camera last year. Thanks Gordon :)
