Mournful Sphinx - Enyo lugubris - female

Mournful Sphinx - Enyo lugubris - Female
Jacksonville, Florida, USA
November 15, 2003
Came to light at a seaside hotel, and remained there for several days in very cold weather. This is a female, based on the detailed illustrations at Lepidoptera of the French Antilles. (Females apparently lack the "stabilizer fin" at the tip of the abdomen.) The clear illustrations of the wing also confirm the species identification. Same site shows difference between the sexes. Male appears to have the "horizontal stabilizer" at the tip of the abdomen, and, of course, a thinner abdomen.
