Rusty Bird Grasshopper - Schistocerca rubiginosa

Rusty Bird Grasshopper - Schistocerca rubiginosa

Size: about 45mm

Schistocerca rubiginosa
It can be debated just which are distinct species and which are mearly varieties of the same species, but in the strict sense, this is S. rubiginosa, which ranges from Iowa, Minnesota, and New England to Florida.

Thanks Ed!
Moved from Bird Grasshoppers.

Schistocerca sp.
Well, this is certainly a 'bird' grasshopper in the genus Schistocerca, but I've never seen one that large with that color pattern. Interesting!

S. lineata or S. alutacea?
This could be either the Spotted Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca lineata) or perhaps the brown form of the Alutacea Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca alutacea). I believe that S. lineata is the larger of the two species, but I make be mistaken.

S. alutacea
Based on range and thickness of the front and middle tibiae (Capinera et al.), I'd go with the Leather-colored Bird Grasshopper (Schistocerca alutacea). This image matches my image from Fort Fisher almost perfectly, so a 100% confirmation would be great.

Ed
