Two leafhopper-like insects -
Gyponana
Pineview Reservoir, Weber County, Utah, USA
August 2, 2009
Took these photos of the brown insect, not knowing it was sitting next to the green insect (until I got home and checked out the photos). Leafhoppers?

I believe...
The brown insect is a meadow spittlebug (
Philaenus spumarius
) and the green one is a leafhopper nymph,
Gyponana
or
Ponana
. I'm still not totally sure what distinguishes the latter two.

leafhopper vs. spittlebug...
Pretty easy once someone points it out to you. Not so easy before then.
For leafhoppers, just looks for the spines on the legs like this one below. The spines are also present on the nymphs.
Spittlebugs have spine-free legs. See image below
