I think this is the Hackberry Emperor (1), but would appreciate other opinions.

A couple dozen of these butterflies were spending the late morning perching on a wooden fence.

according to Glassberg et al (1), white subapical spots above combined with black marginal eye-spot on the front wing are distinctive - plus your picture matches exactly the one in the book!
