Seems to be a male Syrphid on Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Rabbitbrush), but not Eristalis.

yep, one of these coincidences. It is one of my favorite genera...really nice flies... but in the Neotropics they go wild and have easily 300 species!

Also a member of the genus Copestylum, but this time it is a male!
Could be the male that belongs to the female you already posted, but not necessarily!

Fascinating to know that at least (the few hours I spend up there certainly don't display the full picture!) one other species of Copestylum frequents the Angeles Crest area.
This prompted me to post an image of a male C. mexicana (#31548), as well as what I believe to be a female C. mexicana (#31549, 31550), both photographed this July.
