Could be Melanoplus femurrubrum too
Several species occur in that region, and more than one can look a lot like this as a nymph. It is definitely a species of Melanoplus though - a "Spur-throat Grasshopper".

As for the Cricket question. If you look at the photo page for the family "Grylidae" and that for the family "Acrididae", you'll get the idea pretty quickly. One good trait to look for is the antennae, the crickets have long antennae (most often longer than the body), and grasshoppers (all but a few) have short antennae, much thicker. The shape of the body is quite different too. Might want to have a look at some of the other Orthoptera too. There are quite a few that aren't true Crickets, nor are they Grasshoppers (mostly the Katydids, but some other really interesting creatures too).

Not...
a cricket, rather a grasshopper. Might be in the Genus Melanoplus. Someone will likely ID it to species.

Question
What's The difference between a cricket and a grasshopper?
I seem to see them all the same.
Thank you for helping me with this ID
Kathleen

Maybe an immature [i]Melanopl
Maybe an immature Melanoplus bivittatus, but there all the avaialble keys are designed for adults, so...
