Outdoor Oriental cockroach - Blatta orientalis - male

Outdoor Oriental cockroach - Blatta orientalis - Male
Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 4, 2009
Size: ~30 mm
Astonishingly, this is a BugGuide first for Pennsylvania. Blatta orientalis is very common, but there are only 30 images on the Guide - I've seen that many at once under a Dumpster!

----Edited ID Request Text----
Looks like this is probably Blatta orientalis after all, can any roach experts confirm?

----Original ID Request text----
Is this one of the wood cockroaches, P_arcoblatta sp.?

After moving to the city, I developed a pretty strong antipathy to cockroaches, but to my surprise this outdoor roach didn't bother me at all. As they say in real estate, "Location, location, location."

Moved
Moved from Cockroaches. I'm afraid so. The species that you are looking for will have a distinctive white rim at the margins of the thorax.

better outdoors than in, anyway
Thanks for finally pegging this guy. I just wasn't sure it was that imported "household pest" when it wasn't being pesty in a household! I'll stay on the lookout for those native wood roaches.

looks like Oriental Cockroach - Blatta orientalis
I suspect that one is an imported male.

yeah, that does look like it
Darn, I was hoping to get a Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach for Pennsylvania (none in the Guide yet!).
