Red Wasp - Polistes

Red Wasp - Polistes
Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia, USA
July 29, 2009
Size: 21 mm
I have not seen these in my area before and am not sure of the species. Could be Polistes carolina but I would like to be sure

Moved from ID Request.

I don't think there's an alternative to a really close up picture.

Can't tell from this image.
The "red wasp," Polistes carolina, is virtually identical to another species, Polistes perplexus, and it would take a very detailed close-up of the "cheek" behind the eye to give you a conclusive ID.

What do I look for.
What should I look for to determine the difference? I don't have a camera that will take any closer images to send.
