That mite certainly is alien looking. I don't think I've ever seen one like it. What magnification did you zap it at, greater than 2:1 ?

 
I took it at 5:1 on an APS-C
I took it at 5:1 on an APS-C sensor, so given the 22.5mm sensor, a full frame shot would be 4.5mm over 3888 pixels. The body of the mite took up 447px, bringing it to just over .5mm

I'd suspected it was something more along 5:1 mag. I'm assuming you're using the 65mm Canon lens? I'm jealous of that thing.. Nikon needs to get their act together.
