Romalea guttata (syn. R. microptera)
Eastern or Southern Lubber Grasshopper

Eastern
I beleive that it is an eastern. Most lubbers are not this color and neither variation is common to my area. In fact, in 18 years of collecting, I have never seen one. I am going to the area this came from this weekend and hope to find several more. Had I known how rare they were in my area I would not have added this specimen to my collection. If I don't find anymore then this is probably just a hitchhiker that ended up in my friends yard. I would love to know of any behaviors for this species. Thanks.

Lubber
Charles,

SOuthern & Eastern are the same critter. The species is most abundant in areas of the Southeast , hence it is often referred to as the "Southern" Lubber. THere are several western Lubber species, so our Lubber can also be called the eastern.

Sorry for any confusion there :)

NICE FIND ... and very dark (typical of the more northern populations and some from swampy parts of the Gulf coast)
