Mystery Caterpillar - Eumorpha pandorus

Mystery Caterpillar - Eumorpha pandorus
Pelee Island, Ontario, Canada
August 6, 2009
Size: approximately 4"
I photographed this mid-afternoon near the lakefront, in the brush. Here it is pictured partially retracted - head pulled back to form a hood. With head fully extended, it easily measured 4" in length and was as thick around as a grown man's forefinger. Pelee Island is known for it's migratory species, including butterfly, so this could be almost anything. Any ideas?
