Found this guy feeding on a maple tree. I think it is some kind of shield bug.

I agree, sorta:-)
I think this is Parabrochymena arborea, which used to be in the genus Brochymena (dang "splitters":-). The "knobby" "shoulders" are very distinctive for the species (or 'a' species, anyway). Nice image!
