Spodoptera?
Those velvety black triangles make me think of Spodoptera (below) - I've seen a lot of color variation in these.

I think you're right. Armyworm moths are quite common in the area this caterpillar was found.

I've just found the same guy
I've just found the same guy as above, but with black triangles extending all the way up the abdomen. Glad that I found this picture because I was having difficulty id-ing him as well.
