Small Turquoise Beetle - Polydrusus formosus

Small Turquoise Beetle - Polydrusus formosus
Harsens Island, Lake St.Clair, ca. 15 mi NE downtown Detroit, St. Clair County, Michigan, USA
July 30, 2009
Size: 8-10 mm
"The Flats" St.Clair wetlands/marsh-river delta
We found this bright turquoise beetle (a Green Immigrant Leaf Weevil) while cutting the dead marsh grass along the seawall of the family cottage. Even though he/she was quite timid (not really wanting the large end of the macro lens only a few mm away from itself) it was somewhat easy to photograph as it was a very slow walker and it kept having trouble flying. Most often it would attempt to take off and then crash land just 50 or 60mm away, then climb back up a stalk of grass and try again. Its bright coloring may have somehow helped hide it from the thousands of wetlands predators, but to the human eye it stood out like a beacon.
I found it interesting that the only other one shown in the BugGuide is also from an island in (northern)Michigan both of which are close to the major(international) shipping channel. The great lakes shipping traffic includes domestic bulk cargo "Lakers" many now over 1000 foot long and also many international ocean-going ships carrying North American Grain, Salt or other comodities for export. Sometimes we do not find out just what came into the lakes with the "ocean-boats" in the way of marine or insect life(pests)until much later.
