host plant needed - Heterocampa guttivitta
Adel, Dallas County, Iowa, USA
August 11, 2009
Size: 5/8 in.
This caterpiller was on my brother's shirt after a walk in a park. I have not been able to find its host plant. It seems most interested in tree leaves, especially apple, but will not eat more than a few bites. Anyone know what it might eat, or have any suggestions?

According to Wagner's "Caterpillars of Eastern North America", common food plants are
"Apple, beech, birch, blueberry, buckeye, chestnut, dogwood, hazel, hickory, hop hornbeam, maple (esp sugar maple), oak, persimmon, sour gum, sumac, walnut, witch hazel, and many other woody plants"

That being said, I have found that sometimes caterpillars don't like changing the plant they started on. (So, if it fell off oak, it might not care for birch etc.)

Best of luck!

Host Plant
I found the host plant after some more searching. It is oak. Which is good, because it stays fresh for so long.
