Caterpillar - Euphydryas

Caterpillar - Euphydryas
Lake Tahoe, CA, County, California, USA
Size: 1 inch
Found this little fellow at the end of our trail. Lake Margaret Trailhead in Lake Tahoe, CA. I only saw it because it was crossing our path. He had some dirt/fluff attached to it, but otherwise, quite the colorful little one.

Moved from ID Request.

It's definitely Euphydryas
but to tell E. editha caterpillars from E. chaldedona is quite a challenge ((might be far enough east even for an E. anicia type, but I suspect not)). They vary in pattern somewhat from individual to individual and especially from place to place. Sometimes the location is enough to tell for sure, but I'm not sure for Lake Tahoe. It is possible that only one species flies there, and that would nail it down nicely. I expect this is probably E. chalcedona, but I'm not certain.
