Chrysanthrax crocinus - Female
Red Rock Canyon State Park, Kern County, California, USA
August 8, 2009
Size: ~4mm
Don't have my thinking cap on since taking care of my granddaughter, but would like to share a few images taken during a short stop along a wash in RRCSP.
I'm sure Andy will be able to help.
Male of probably the same sp.:

Update: Doug Yanega (UC Riverside) kindly checked & provided the ID.

one of the finest photos ever
thank you for posting this photo. I have an interest in all natural systems in Kern County.

Moved from Villini.

An ID to species -- wonderful news!
This truly is one of the most breath-taking bee flies I've ever seen...

Moved
Moved from ID Request to tribe since I don't have a question about tribal affiliation; vein R2+3 comes off at an angle of 90ยบ.
I was lucky to encounter a number of these during a rather short stop. I biefly saw another interesting, tiny, dark-winged bombyliid, but didn't have the time to wait and search.

Great fly
What a lavish shot of one of my favorite bee flies. I don't know what species it is, if it has one. The dark-winged form may be the sexually dimorphic mate of this one.

Thanks for your comments, Andy -
I just recalled that I had at least one photo of a male with base of wing infuscated, which I just submitted.
The little dark-winged one I mentioned earlier had no red on the abdomen, with much darker wings, & must have been something else. Perhaps a Hemipenthes of sorts, but I didn't see enough. There's always another season.

No help with ID
But this is one great looking bee fly. What great colors. Nice shot.

No doubt, this one's a beauty!
I'm with Ken... I can't wait to find out the ID too!

Wow -
what a gorgeous bee fly! Looking forward to the ID on this one - nice photo!
