chrysalis ID - Pleuroprucha insulsaria
Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey, USA
August 13, 2009
Size: 3/8 inch
I brought home some boneset from the Honey Brook Organic Farm in Pennington. Noticed a couple of days ago that the whole bouquet was wiggling with inchworms! Mostly E. miserulata with one camouflaged looper. I'm new at this so it took me a while to even realize this wasn't a leaf. I put the rest of the larvae out on my Joe-Pye Weed, and would love to know what this is and how to look after it. Thanks!

Moved
Moved from ID Request. Mine was pretty eager to fly away too, which is why I didn't get any better photos--these were taken while it was still inside the plastic vial. To see other photos of this species (adults and caterpillars), you can click on the gray "images" tab above your photo.

Common tan wave, I bet
Sorry it took so long for you to get a response. I collected an identical pupa last summer in Nashville, and this is what emerged:

...another kind of inchworm. Has anything emerged from yours? You don't really need to do much to look after it--I kept mine in a plastic vial (in a cooler, because I was on a road trip at the time). Just keeping it in a jar should do the trick.

common tan wave - thanks!
Thanks for the reply! Mine surprised me by emerging overnight; the next morning he was fluttering around my kitchen. I was able to hustle him out the door, but couldn't get a good look. So your photo is much appreciated!
