Wasp? Fly? - Mydas maculiventris

Wasp? Fly? - Mydas maculiventris
Florida, USA
August 13, 2009
Don't have the size or exact location (other than Florida) on this one. An internet friend took the photo (David Ricoarango).
I will get the size and location when I hear back from him.

I looked for a while but hit a dead end. The antennae didn't look like a wasp to me. Could be a type of fly? I don't know...
Any help would be appreciated.

Probably maculiventris is correct but let us wait for confirmation.

MAYBE - Mydas maculiventris

Looks about right..
that looks really close to it. I am betting you are correct, William. Thanks a lot everyone for the help. Might contact the guy another poster has on his image of this species.

Thanks Both of you
Appreciate it. I have never seen any of these in Cali where I live. So its new to me. I will look into the genus you mentioned Jon and move it if I get a for sure ID on it.

Thanks again.
Bruce

There are mydas flies at Riley Wilderness Park
in Trabuco Canyon, Orange County. But I haven't seen them often.

It's incredible...
how many diff insects there are out there. I would like to see one of these sometime. They look a little like a stiletto fly crossed with a wasp. But I imagine they are much larger than the stiletto I have captured.

I wonder
if this is in the genus, Coenomyia? Looks similar to one I shot in July.

thanks
for getting me started in the right direction!
