Goldenrod Soldier Beetle (Chauliognathus pennsylvanicus) - Chauliognathus pensylvanicus
Greenville, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA

Size: 1/2"
I checked The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders. I'm tentatively giving it an ID of Pennsylvania Leather-wing? It was consuming the center of a Black-eyed Susan.

Hi Marcia, yes it is Chauliognathus pensylvanicus

yes it is Chauliognathus pensylvanicus
Thank you Maury!

Wow! I was able to ID it: my skills are coming along. I really enjoy BugGuide.Net. I see also that a common name for this insect is "Goldenrod Soldier Beetle". Is it referred more (when using the common name) to the above, or as a "Pennsylvania Leather-wing" which was the only common name in the Audubon Field Guide I used? I like to title my photos by the common name an insect is usually known as. Of course, the Latin name is specific.

Many thanks,
Marica
