Stenelmis crenata

Stenelmis crenata
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA

These elmids are immersed in a drop of water -- their natural environment -- to show the richness of their markings. They waited patiently in a moist jar for over a month, so I freed them after this photo shoot.

A note about longevity
A month in a jar is nothing for these little guys. They've been known to live in the strangest environments for more than a year. Cole (1957) kept an elmid alive in a small vial in his office for over a year. : )

Compliments.
Just wanted to compliment Jim for continuing to bring us multiple images of very unique beetles! He may have single-handedly submitted more new families to bugguide than anyone else. Keep up the great work:-)

Thanks
Possibly more beetle families, but who's counting? If I had to guess, I'd say Tom Murray has more by dint of sheer number of images. That's 3,816 photos posted here at last count!!!
