Lady beetle larva with prey - Day 10 - Coleomegilla maculata Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA July 24, 2009 Size: 9.1 mm (?)
Fourth instar. The measurement may be incorrect, because it was 9.4 mm yesterday. I'm dyslexic with numbers and may have meant to write "10.1" instead.
Prey: Oleander or milkweed aphid (Aphis nerii). I later read that these aphids are toxic because of their foodplants, and can cause developmental problems in the pupae of larvae that eat them. Of the three larvae that fed on these aphids, one never emerged from the pupa, but the others became normal adults. I will not feed A. nerii to my larvae in the future.
Plant: Lady's thumb/smartweed (Polygonum sp.). Aphid collected from milkweed (Asclepias sp.).
