Unicorn beetle
This is the "eastern hercules beetle," aka "unicorn beetle," Dynastes tityus, and a female. Males have a pair of long horns, one on the head and one on the thorax. Females seem to frequent roads, ironically, perhaps because they are normally free of obstacles in their flight path....until a Buick comes along, of course.
