Wasp vs. Spider -
Entypus unifasciatus
-
Kesslers Cross Lanes, Nicholas County, West Virginia, USA
August 16, 2009
I saw this wasp(?) dragging a dead spider across the road. I'm not sure if it killed the spider or just found it.

they hunt the spiders
That's a spider hunting wasp. They do seek, sting, and use spiders as food for their larva. They'll place them in a dug out burrow, lay eggs on them, and their larva will eat the spider.

ID
One of the few wasps in the family Pompilidae that can be identified from an image taken at this distance:
Entypus unifasciatus
. I didn't know you could get that much detail using GoogleEarth. Just kidding:-)
