this nervous beetle was buzzing around the lights, landing and then flying again. What are the (mites?) on its back?

Burying beetle
might be Nicrophorus nigrita. Mites like to hitch a ride on these sorts of beetles but in the process they slightly limit the flying ability of the adult beetle.

yes
Most likely it is N. nigrita and if you ever get another one, this is one species I do not have in my research collection and would like to acquire one!

N. nigrita
I believe I might have that species in my collection at home. I live in Washington and when I get back next week I can check and if I have extras, which I believe I do, I can send you one.

Excellent!
Any help would be most appreciated! Let me know if there is anything from around here you may be interested in.

N. nigrita
I wish I had known. There was one last night, minus hitchhikers.
I will look see tonight.

Beetle and parasites
thanks for your help.I believe it, about flying limitation. This guy kept bumping into everything and landing on its back several times.
Thanks again
