Mystery Flying - Hemaris thysbe

Mystery Flying - Hemaris thysbe
Woodstock, Cherokee County, Georgia, USA
August 18, 2009
Size: 4 inch wing span
I have seen several of these buzzing around. It was hovering the butterfly bush - it had not landed on it. The others that I have seen are yellow and black striped where this one is green. Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated. The picture was taken around 5:00pm eastern standard time.

i agree with dan
the other ones your seeing are probably Amphion floridensis

Not an expert
But I believe this is a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth

Hemaris thysbe

There are a few other species in the same genus that look very similar, you likely have multiple species in the same area. Check out the genus Hemanis and take a look for yourself:

Thank you
My son, who is in Iraq, just emailed me the same response. Thank you so much for your quick reply to my ID Request. They are beautiful moths!

No problem
I enjoy watching them hover around my butterfly bushes as well!
