One for Nancy - Oecanthus latipennis - male

One for Nancy - Oecanthus latipennis - Male
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
August 20, 2009
Nancy noted that BugGuide had no tree cricket photos for SC. So I've been on the lookout for one. Tonight I found one right on the front porch, singing from my avocado plant. Is it Oecanthus latipennis?

I agree with your ID - O. latipennis!
The red on the head and the proximal portion of the antennae is striking. Great find. I envy you...I have not yet seen this species. The closest species in appearance is the pale form of O. californicus -- but the first few segments of the antennae beyond the pedicel and scape would be black.

The paddle shaped wings indicates this is a male. He also happens to be 'macropterous' as evidenced by the elongated hind wings extending far beyond the end of the fore wings or tegmina--as well as the cerci.

I'm still learning, so hopefully I've used the correct wing terminology :)
