stalkeyed fly?
Diopsidae? This page says there's only one species in North America, but nearctica.com lists two.

Sphyracephala
I could only find images of Sphyracephala brevicornis, and Cedar Creek has one that looks like mine, but the other site shows one with a red abdomen, and yellow legs and part of the face is yellow too.

So I'll place it by genus, and not down to species. Thanks for the ID.

Fantastic addition to Bugguide!
What a find, Tom:-) I've only collected one specimen, in Cincinnati; and had never seen an adequate image of one. Your shots are superb. Nice work!

Thanks Eric
I guess that if I'm out enough, sometimes I'll get lucky. This one was cooperative enough for me to get 4 shots before it dissapeared.
