Explanation of Names

Psallus haematodes (Gmelin 1790)

Size

3-3.8 mm(1)

Identification

In e. Asian specimens, the 1st antennomere yellow with 2 brown spots at bases of spines in medial part. Dorsum in anterior part dirty yellow or whitish yellow, usually more or less red posteriorly; venter pale or abdomen partly brown. Femora and tibiae yellow, whitish or sligthly reddish, with more or less large black spots. Cuneus entirely white, without any red spots. Coloration from pale yellowish with few reddish spots to dominantly light red.(1)

native to the Palaearctic (throughout Europe and Siberia), adventive in our area (BC)(2)

Season

mid-July to early September(1)

Food

Salix spp. appear to be main hosts in Europe; reported to prey on small arthropods in Sweden(2)
