bee fly?

bee fly?
Lafayette, Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 23, 2009
Size: 1.2cm
this insect was found flying about a patch of flowers in an open sunny area. there were honey bees, bumble bees and hornets feeding, but this insect just flew about like a wasp, never stopping on any flowers, but circling the flower bed repeatedly, until i was able to snag it in a net.
Has fly features, and looking thru BG...looks a bit like thevenetimyia or tachinids....? Any help from the experts?
