Psorophora ciliata - female

Psorophora ciliata - Female
Indian River, Vero Beach County, Florida, USA
September 19, 2005
This is not actually dead. It is anaesthetized with triethylamine, a substance which knocks mosquitoes out for about 24 hours. It was collected with a lard can trap at a hammock site near Vero Beach.
The key feature for telling these apart from Psorophora howardii is the yellow proboscis. There are some differences in the scutum as well, but they are not visible in this image.
