Host plant ID
I think the plant in this photo is one of the "lettuce look-alikes", but is not actually Wild lettuce (
Lactuca canadensis
). Instead, I think it is
Common Sow-thistle (
Sonchus oleraceus
)
; note the spined, clasping leaf base. Note also the slightly flattened and grooved stem (along where most of the aphids are located).

Correction
Upon further perusal of manuals, I see that the groove in the stem is too wide for that of
Sonchus
. So it goes back to
Lactuca
, but is a spiny species such as the
Sonchus
-like
L. scariola
instead of the spineless
L. canadensis
.
