Cicada... but which one? - Tibicen canicularis

Cicada... but which one? - Tibicen canicularis
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
August 15, 2009
Size: approx. 5-7cm long
I know it's a cicada, but I was wondering if anyone could identify it more precisely?
Appreciate the help :)

Tibicen canicularis
The Common Dog-day Cicada is your most likely candidate. There are a few species of Tibicen ranging into southern parts of your province, however, canicularis is generally the most commonly seen and heard.

I recommend checking sound files under Tibicen canicularis....It sounds much like a "buzz saw".

In id., I'm taking into consideration the following traits.
1) Light eye color (variable in canicularis, but light eyes are much less likely in pruinosus, linnei, or robinsonianus - all usually characterized by dark eyes)
2) Bronze powdered appearance (a wax coating - a.k.a. pruinosity)

hope that helps
