Cocoon or insect egg case - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Cocoon or insect egg case - Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis
Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 1, 2009
Size: 3/4" in dia by 2" long
About a month ago, I was walking through a wetland along the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, PA. I was walking under a grove of trees when I saw this cocoon or egg case or whatever, lying on the path. I brought it home and placed it on my back porch under similar environmental conditions as those where it was found. I observe it daily; however there has been no change. I assume that it is a cocoon or insect egg case of some type. The object is approximately ¾” in diameter by 2“ long. The small cut twigs attached to the outside of the object appear to be camouflage. I have spent most of my life in the outdoors and have enjoyed observing all aspects of nature, but have never seen anything like this. Do you know what it is?
