Nymph of a Tibicen cicada -very close up- - Tibicen
Peoria County, Illinois, USA
August 27, 2009
Size: about 1 and 1/2 inches
I found this particular specimen around 3:00 a.m. while walking my dog after a thunder storm. That is why the specimen is so clean.Usually I find them with dirt still caked on from emerging from underground where they feed on the sap of tree roots for upwards of 15 to 17 yrs.

Thanks!
Thanks for the help identifying this specimen down to the genus Bill!!!!!!!;O)

Tibicen sp.
It's very interesting how it pulls its legs together like that in a "bunch". That is a behaviour I regularly see in only 2 southeastern species, Tibicen tibicen (chloromerus) & Tibicen davisi.

Generally most other Tibicen cicada nymphs either pull the legs into the sides or keep flailing around like they are trying to walk or grab onto something.

f.y.i. - I don't think that nymph is either one of those species.
T. davisi is a southern species and T. tibicen nymphs possess different characters - esp. eye color (a more striking olive green) and the fact the nymphs/shells can be characterized by dark coloration at the base of the wing pad.

Adult Cicada
I'm going to post a male of the same genus soon that already molted before I seal it in lucite. I just sealed a female, but have to pour 1 more layer before it's complete. Here soon I'll post various angles of the female before I started sealing it.The cicadas are out in record numbers this year in IL.The male mating call is so strong in my neighborhood that it sounds like electricity in the air.Cicadas and Mantids are my favorite insects!!! I even have a BBC video showcasing the amazing life cycle of the cicada on my MySpace page.I may buy a pet mantis kit at Hobby Looby soon to breed them! I got one to grow over 5" long in captivity in Pass Christian,MS when I lived there by feeding it calcium enhanced crickets.
