What spider, please. - Araneus saevus

What spider, please. - Araneus saevus
Loudonville, Ashland County, Ohio, USA
August 29, 2009
Could this be Araneus? A year or so ago I found a very similar spider 100 yards away from this one that was crawling about on a porch swing frame.

Great optical illusion....
...looks like a hairy frog. (with extra legs, that is.)

You're right!
I'd missed that. Cool!

Wonder if it might be a male Araneus saevus
in the guide here. Nice find! Let's see if Lynette agrees.

Thanks, John.
And yes, I hope Lynette agrees. We'll wait :0) The irony of this 'find' is that my sister-in-law spotted it from 6 feet away. It was only a foot from my elbow and I'd have missed it. The irony arrives in the form of her severe arachnophobia. Poor thing had to sit across from me and watch as I chased it around for these photos. The men wanted to dispatch the creature and relented as I demanded they spare it. I felt like I was playing Pocahontas to the spider's John Smith.
