Size: maybe 1.5 inches
My son picked it up and held it.
I have submitted photos of both the top and underside. They both look identical to top and underside photos submitted in 2008 by a person in Louisiana. I just don't know exactly what type of Phyllodesma moth caterpillar it is.

reminds me of
larvae of genus Apotolype, Tolype, and especially Phyllodesma in the Lasiocampidae. I'd guess that it's at least in this family.

 
I'm thinking Phyllodesma too
Looks a lot like P. americana - one of the less-ornate variations, like this:
