Unknown Orange and Black Bug- Poudre Canyon, Colorado - Nicrophorus tomentosus

Unknown Orange and Black Bug- Poudre Canyon, Colorado - Nicrophorus tomentosus
Poudre Canyon, Larimer County, Colorado, USA
August 20, 2009
Size: Approx. 2 inchs long
Unknown bug was found on my backpack at around dusk. It was in a small park on the side of the Poudre River, a mid-size Colorado river. He was in grass (lawn, really) but surrounding habitat is sage scrubland/ponderosa pines away from the river. It's hard to see on this shot, but his right outer shell is missing.

Sexton beetle
Nicrophorus tomentosus, the yellow hair is distinctive for this species
