Grand Rapids, Kent County/Grand Rapids/West Michigan County, Michigan, USA
August 26, 2009
Size: Body 30mm,withWings50mm
I found this Cicada while cleaning out the eve troughs. At first the buzzing and movement was scary in that I was 15ft up on a ladder. I clamped a recently trimmed branch in my B&D workmate & put him on the branch. For several minutes he seemed frozen in place. He did fall off a couple times and he would end up on his back and "play dead". That did make photographing his bottom side easier though. I found that he appears to be a Dog-Days Cicada (Tibicen auletes) from the U of M's Zoology website on the Cicadas of Michigan. Even though this has been a cool and wet Summer I still hear that extreemly loud buzzing they make every afternoon. It is one of the sounds that bring back those hot lazy Summer afternoons as a child before air conditioning.
