Devastating Grasshopper - Melanoplus devastator - female

Devastating Grasshopper - Melanoplus devastator - Female
Horseshoe Lake, Skyline Ridge, Santa Clara County, California, USA
September 1, 2009
Size: ~ 20-25 mm
Spots, not bands, on the wings; distinctive pattern on pronotum. Genus/species/gender?

This one jumped when I moved in to get the "locust mite" on the leg. I often see an aquatic version of these red ectoparasites on odonates, but this is the first time I've seen one on a locust.

Agreed -
Melanoplus devastator I think it is.

A female.

Not an expert -
but reminds me of Melanoplus devastator (what a great name), which I've found in the Bay Area. Please wait for David, Eric or another expert to comment, though, as I really don't know my orthoptera too well...
