Queen - Male?? - Danaus gilippus - male

Queen - Male?? - Danaus gilippus - Male
San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas, USA
August 23, 2009
Size: Approx.. 3-1/2" wingspan
Another view of one of the butterflies in this group. There are several on the same tree every day. At first glance, I thought they were all Monarchs but thought it was too early. We have large numbers that migrate to our trees each year in the fall.

no expert, but does look like a male
On the inner hindwing there's a dark oval patch - females don't have it. I don't know the scientific terms, but it emits a scent or pheromone that says "I'm a male! Females come mate with me! Other males get away from me!"

(Exactly the function of a male bird's song, now that I think of it.)
