i can tell you thats some sor
i can tell you thats some sort of swallowtail butterfly caterpiller. unfortunately from the picture i cant say what kind.
but the good news is if you do a search you can find it in swallowtails just searchfor swallowtail butterfly in search, click on browse then choose to look at caterpillers.
i can also tell you the eyes are fake. they are a protective (scare away the bird sort of marking).
his head is a tiny thing wayyyy down in front.

 
Do you know what kind of plant it was on?
That can be very helpful since most swallowtails feed on only one kind of plant.

it was actually on a tiny island in the middle of a lake and it was on a dead piece of wood so no i didnt see what it was feeding on

I appreciate ur quick response it was definately a unique looking insect and I was quite curious as to its ID. Ive seen alot of different insects but this was pretty cool looking with those fake eyes lol.
