Unknown Ground Hornet - Vespula squamosa

Unknown Ground Hornet - Vespula squamosa
Montrose, Laurens County, Georgia, USA

Size: Unknown
These bruisers are camped on my front lawn. I specifically left them alone all summer to see what they would do. I can't find this particular species in the Guide, most yellowjackets and ground hornets having black faces and no stripes on the top of the thorax. They are not particularly aggressive as I can get within 4 feet without any commotion on their part at all. They are apparently a very busy lot with much comings and goings.

Thank you. I wasn't totally sure as the very yellow faces kinda threw me. On later, much closer, inspection (only to find something has managed to mangle the nest opening), the view I got confirmed it. The workers are very busy now repairing things and not in the mood to let me get really close anymore. Maybe later. Again, thanks!
